Working with San Francisco Community – Recent Endeavors

August 12, 2014

Lately and with great honor I have had wonderful opportunities as an artist and graphic designer to work with my direct community in San Francisco.

Currently and recently launched is a very crucial fundraiser to Save The African Outlet and help them establish a dynamic African Cultural Center in San Francisco. A place that is safe and accessible for all SF residents and visitors to get in touch with Native Africa, the roots of all human culture.

Working with store owners Judah Dwyer and Horgan Edet, I edited the video, constructed the graphics, advised and assisted with setting up their crowd-fundraiser campaign.

You can also see more of my work and follow their journey at www.facebook.com/SaveTheAfricanOutlet

The African Outlet is my favorite store in the whole world and even more so like a shrine. Any of your help with this cause is deeply appreciated.

Also over the last couple of months I have been working on a collaborative community painting project with Jason Wynman of 14 Black Poppies and Rebbeca Shultz for CHP Housing Project in San Francisco.

We ask people the question where do you belong? For there they constructed their own visual about the subject matter and pasted onto a large canvas which Rebbeca and I have been painting around, making it look a bit like a map or topological view of a landscape.

Very much looking forward to the next phase and very happy to be working along side so many creative constructive forces in my direct community: San Francisco, California.

Help us Save The African Outlet! Keep African Culture and Diversity Alive in Hayes Valley, San Francisco!

With great honor I have been working with my dear friends and community at The African Outlet getting their campaign online to save their store in 20 year landmark location. Creating Graphics, a facebook page and moveon.org petition under the direction of owners Judah Dwyer and Horgan Edet.

The African Outlet is an independently owned shop and magical place in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco (824 Octavia Street). You can refer to them at their links TheAfricanOutlet.org and facebook.com/TheAfricanOutlet

They bring traditional African culture, ambiance and quality African cargo directly to and engaging with our community in the heart of San Francisco since 1989. The African Outlet with their group of drummers and dancers, The African Outlet Experience participate in community cultural events in the SF Bay Area such as Carnaval Parade, Juneteenth Parade and July 4th World One Festival. It such a joy to participate with them in these events. In 2012 I wrote a blog post after participating at their event in Carnaval where you can see with your own eyes https://moonsquirrel.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/african-outlet-experience-at-carnival-2012-san-francisco-ca/

Supporting independent local artists and merchants in the Bay Area and across Africa making them essential to our economy.

Many of my hand-sewn items such as Voodoo Dolls and medicine bags are sold there and I collect from them many special charms to use in my work. Horgan and Judah are both very knowledgeable about the items and the culture/traditions/story behind everything in the store. I go there often for inspiration, to learn and share my work with the community. I learn something new every time I go.

The African Outlet means a lot to me and so many people in my direct community and is an essential asset to the quality of life in San Francisco. If you support local art, independent business, traditional African culture or want a boost of some powerful good Ju-Ju, you are all welcome and invited to help us by liking, sharing and inviting your friends to our facebook page at facebook.com/SaveTheAfricanOutlet

Also you can sign at share our petition at petitions.moveon.org/sign/save-the-african-outlet

This will help get our message out to our official representative and show the landlords and property managers how much The African Outlet means to us in San Francisco and beyond.

Thank you so much in your interest. Here are some graphics I made for the campaign which if you like, you can use to share our message and page links. If you do this let me know if you like I can post your link on my blog and give you some huge shout-outs in exchange as thanks.
